Bouldering gyms in Hokkaido

Boulder

Today, I would like to write about the bouldering gyms in Hokkaido that I know as well as some information that I got on the Internet.
Some climbers may only climb at their home gyms they usually go to.
Each gym has different sizes and shapes of walls, varieties of shapes and materials of holds, and the type and difficulty of problems; therefore, it is a good opportunity to see how much you can climb in totally different environments. You can also enjoy shopping at nearby shops and restaurants, which I think is also a way to spend a fulfilling holiday.

Ishikari Subprefecture

Sapporo City: Gravity Research Sapporo

This bouldering gym has a large wall area and is located in the shopping mall “Sapporo Factory,” so it is a popular gym where many climbers enjoy bouldering especially on weekends.
It seems that the difficulty of problems here is increasing year by year probably because the proficiency level of climbers is steadily increasing over the years, but it’s still a great place to enjoy bouldering.
There are many outdoor equipment stores and restaurants in the mall, so it is an ideal place where you can spend a day off by climbing, shopping, eating out, etc.

Sapporo City: Whipper Snapper Gym (a.k.a. Whips)

The impression that I have for this bouldering gym is that strong climbers around Sapporo come here. The level of problems in competitions held here is very high, which is probably the reason why I get that impression.
There is a unique shape of a roof wall, some slab walls, and also a slab wall here, so you can enjoy various types of problems.

Sapporo City: NAC Sapporo Climbing Gym

This gym is located in “Rasora Sapporo” and has both bouldering walls and lead walls. There are plenty of lead problems here.
There is also a café right next to the bouldering area, so you may sometimes see parents taking a break at the café while their children are climbing.
It’s really nice that you can enjoy shopping at various stores after enjoying climbing here.

Sapporo City: Sports Climbing Gym Rainbow Cliff

This gym has been around for a long time in Sapporo, but it has recently built a facility “Nobo-nobo” where you can learn how to climb while having fun.
In the “Rainbow Cliff” gym, there are bouldering walls on the 1st and 2nd floors, and there is even a MoonBoard on the 2nd floor!
There are lead walls as well, and even overhanging, roof-shaped lead walls, too, so you can totally enjoy various problems.

Sapporo City: Signal Climbing Gym

This bouldering gym is relatively new in Sapporo. Walls with various angles are surrounding the rest space in the middle, and you can enjoy various problems from a slab wall to a roof wall.
There are also monthly problems with difficulty levels ranging from A to Z, so you can try different problems every month, which will surely increase your motivation to keep coming here to climb.

Sapporo City: North Cave Gym

I have actually never been to this gym yet, but based on the information on Climbing Net, it’s described as a gym that outdoor-bouldering lovers go to.
In the photo on the website below, there are a lot of holds covering the walls, which gives me the impression that we will get strong if we climb here.

Chitose City: Orange Slab

This gym has walls on all four sides that surround the resting space in the middle, and there are an overhanging wall and a slab wall as what the gym name indicates, so you can enjoy a variety of problems from static ones to dynamic ones.
When I go to this gym, I’m also looking forward to visiting a delicious restaurant in Chitose after climbing. Why don’t you have a good holiday plan to enjoy both climbing and tasty food?

Sorachi Subprefecture

Bibai City: Bibai City Sports Center

This is the facility where I work. There are lead walls and bouldering walls that Bibai City is proud of. You can climb here with a very low usage fee.
Since it is located in the gymnasium, you can play with a ball when there are no other users around.
Since it is located in the gymnasium, you can play with a ball when there are no other users of the gymnasium. Sometimes I see some climbers enjoying climbing and playing with their children when they rest.

Takizawa City: Clutch

This bouldering space is located right next to a delicious coffee shop in Takikawa City, and it’s a wall covered with so many holds.
The space seems to be a bit small, but it is well designed to utilize the space, so you can enjoy various problems such as a roof wall, a slab-like wall, and an overhanging wall. There are so many problems in the files that climbers who come here regularly have made in the past.
To use this bouldering space, first enter the coffee shop, tell the owner that you want to use the bouldering space, and pay the usage fee.
When you enter the coffee shop, you’ll notice the elegant aroma of coffee is wafting around. If you are a coffee-lover, do you wanna enjoy a delicious cup of coffee after climbing as well?

Kamikawa Subprefecture

Asahikawa City: Wall of Early Morning Light (Asahikawa Guts Wall)

I haven’t been to this bouldering gym yet, but I get the impression that this gym is where very strong climbers gather.
It is close to Kamuikotan, which is a famous outdoor bouldering area in Hokkaido, and is located in Asahikawa that has the second largest population in Hokkaido. I assume that may be part of the reasons why strong climbers gather here.
I guess it would be great day if you could enjoy shopping, sightseeing, and eating before or after climbing in Asahikawa.

Asahikawa City: Hayauchi-man Wall in Asahikawa Shugakuso

This bouldering wall is located next to the outdoor equipment store of Asahikawa Shuugakuso. When you tell the cashier of this store that you want to use the bouldering wall and pay the usage fee, you can use it, but if you are using this wall for the first time, you need read the consent form (I assume in Japanese) and sign it.
There are a lot of problems in the files that local climbers here have made, and you can enjoy various problems from relatively easy ones to extremely hard ones.
On rainy days when you can’t go to Kamuikotan, this place becomes lively with strong climbers.

Tokachi Subprefecture

Obihiro City: WONDER WALL

I haven’t been to this bouldering gym yet. It’s a new gym that just opened two years ago.
According to my climbing friend who has climbed there, the difficulty levels of the problems here are just right, and if you climb in order from the lowest grade, you can expect smooth progress.
It is a bouldering gym where you can enjoy various types of problems that make good use of the space in the gym.

Makubetsu Town: Tokachi Climbing Gym

The area of this bouldering gym is simply so vast, which is about the size of two large barns, and there are walls with various angles, a roof wall, and even a wall that you can mantle on it.
If you add another activity to make a plan such as going to Obihiro for “sightseeing + climbing,” you can enjoy your holiday even more.

Ikeda Town: REDPOINT

I haven’t been to this gym yet, but according to the information on the Internet, it seems that a former community revitalization coordinator was involved in its establishment, so there must have been some kind of dramas before this gym was established. Thinking about such dramas makes me feel kinda moved.
By looking at the picture on its website, it seems that there is also an overhanging wall, so it must be a wall that makes you stronger as you keep climbing.

Kushiro Subprefecture

Kushiro City: D-Bouldering Kushiro

This bouldering gym was established by renovating the second floor of a bowling alley, so there are many problems that make full use of its abundant space.
Since it used to be a bowling alley, there are many benches, where you can take a break.
When I visited this gym, there was a teepee tent in the middle space, where climbers can chill while reading climbing magazines.
Problems here include those using only large volumes, slab problems, roof problems, and even a MoonBoard here! It’s a gym where you can enjoy various problems all day long.

Engaru Town: ATHELETE WOOMO

I haven’t been to this gym yet. It was built relatively recently by renovating a house to install bouldering walls.

I haven’t been to this gym yet, but according to the information on its website, it opened more than 10 years ago, and was relocated seven years ago, making the gym equipped with great walls.
If I ever go to Hakodate, I would love to visit and climb in this gym.

Hakodate City: HOMIE

I’ve been to this gym before. This bouldering gym was established by renovating a red brick warehouse.
With walls of different angles and even a slab wall, you can enjoy different types of problems.
If you go on a trip to Hakodate, you may wanna include climbing in this gym in your trip plan.

These are the gyms where I have climbed in the past, the gyms that I know, or the gyms of which I got information on the Internet.
In addition to these gyms, there are various climbing facilities in Hokkaido.
Those who usually climb in Bibai walls often go on climbing trips to other gyms, and those who climb in other gyms often climb in Bibai walls on weekends.
If you can enjoy climbing at another gym while enjoying sightseeing as well, it will definitely be a wonderful way to spend your holiday.
